Project Description:

This grant is a partnership between WBESC in Paulding, Ohio and the Ashbrook Center for Public Affairs at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. As a part of this grant, social studies teachers from Paulding, Van Wert, Mercer, and Auglaize Counties in Ohio can participate in intensive week-long summer institutes at Ashland University. These institutes are designed to assist teachers in deepening and broadening both their understanding and appreciation of American history. The focus of the institutes will be the substantive study of American history. The discussions will revolve around original historical documents and their use in the classroom. These institutes are offered at no charge, and each teacher will receive a $500 stipend for participating. All meals and housing in apartments at Ashland University will be provided. Each institute will be a rigorous, six-day, graduate-level program that begins on a Sunday afternoon and concludes on a Friday afternoon. Because of the intensive nature of the program, students should make no other plans during the institute. Books and other readings will be mailed four-to-six weeks before the institute. Students in the summer institutes will be participating as audit students in courses that are a part of Ashland University's Master of American History and Government degree program. Teachers may choose to receive two hours of Master's degree credit from Ashland University. The two credits will cost $440. Additional information about the institutes, including the on-line application, is available on-line at: http://www.TeachingAmericanHistory.org/institutes
