→ Return to Projects List
Welcome to the Teaching American History: The Akron Plan* member homepage, presented by Akron Board of Education.
| The Teaching American History:The Akron Plan (TAHAP) grant is a partnership of the Akron Public Schools, The University of Akron and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association that offers professional development for teachers in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th and 10th grades in the Akron schools. Our intent is to provide opportunities for teachers to gain knowledge of people and events in US history and to learn new pedagogical methods for delivering social studies and American history content, with the ultminate goal of increasing student understanding. Teachers will use the history of Akron as a lens to examine issues that spiral throughout US history. We are meeting these goals through a two-week Summer Institute, a series of Saturday seminars with nationally known historians and monthly unit plan development meetings. In years two and three we are also implementing participation in National History Day projects.
We have organized the grant around six core themes that recur throughout US hisotry: The United States in the World: American Foreign Relations; The Constitution and the Meaning of Freedom; Inventing America: Innovation, Technology and Economic Growth; The Peopling of America: Immigration and Migration; Social Change and Social Reform; and Akron's Past: Local History in a National Context. |
