Welcome to Gateway to History

Gateway to History (GTH) is a new online resource designed for K-12 history and social studies educators in Ohio and elsewhere. Think of us as a “gateway” site that makes a vast array of history-related resources easily accessible to educators anywhere, anytime.

The initial focus of the site is to:

  • Link and serve the 20 Teaching American History (TAH) grant projects in Ohio.
  • Host information online for the Buckeye Council for History Education (BCHE).
  • Post news and announcements about history programs and resources, particularly news related to the TAH projects, which will be of interest to educators throughout the state.

GTH now makes these resources available to the thousands of social studies teachers in the state.

Gateway to History also provides a way for the Buckeye Council for History Education to reach all teachers in Ohio. Teachers can learn about BCHE programs and activities simply by looking online.

The History Resources section and Programs and Events section are now available. Check back frequently to see the latest additions of links to museums, historic sites, libraries, lesson plans, organizations, programs, conferences, and events of interest to social studies and history teachers.

The Ohio Humanities Council is pleased to sponsor this site in cooperation with the various Teaching American History grant projects in Ohio. Funding for GTH is generously provided by SBC and the We the People program of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

TAH Grant Projects

In 2001, the federal government launched the Teaching American History Grant (TAH) program with the goal of supporting funding of programs that raised student achievement by improving teachers' knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of American history. The program was largely the inspiration of Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia, who expressed concern about the state of American history teaching in the nation’s K-12 schools and urged his Senate colleagues to take action.  [READ MORE]
