Local History Teacher Award Winner Announced
The Buckeye Council for History Education, in association with the Ohio Council for the Social Studies and the Ohio Historical Society, is pleased to announce that Angel King is the first recipient of the BCHE/OCSS Local History Teacher Award. This award recognizes the importance of state and local history education in the lives of students and communities.
Angel has done outstanding work in the teaching of local and state history. She has gained the respect of her peers in the Sciotoville Community School for her ability to engage her students in the history of their town, their state, and their country. Angels commitment to learning and teaching is evident in her active participation in professional development activities. Angel is currently participating in her fourth year of the Think History Teaching American History project. In addition, she is a Civil War Preservation Trust member, a Belfer Scholar, and past participant in the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College and a Gilder-Lehrman Summer Institute.

Teacher Open House
All educators and their families are welcome to attend the Teacher Open House on July 23, 2009 from 10 AM to 5 PM at the Ohio Historical Center . Come learn about resources available to history educators in central Ohio . Admission is free.
Picturing America Pre-Conference Workshop
The Ohio Humanities Council invites Ohio social studies, art, and language arts educators to a summer workshop, July 23, 2009, 9 AM to 3 PM at the Ohio Historical Center to learn more about the connection between art and history and explore ways to utilize Picturing America resources with students. Friday Conference Sessions
The Buckeye Council for History Education is pleased to announce our 2009 annual conference, Programs, Progress, and People: Innovation in History. The conference will be held at the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus, Ohio on July 23 and 24, 2009. Our conference theme reflects next years National History Day theme, Innovation in History: Impact and Change. We will highlight the impacts of the programs and policies of the New Deal, particularly the WPA.
This years conference will feature concurrent sessions which address history content, pedagogy and resources. Sessions will be led by academic and public historians, top educators from the state of Ohio and professional archivists and curators. Our keynote speaker will be Timothy Messer-Kruse of Bowling Green State University . Other scheduled speakers include Donna DeBlasio of Youngstown State University, Stephen Ortiz of Bowling Green State University, Cleveland-based historian John Vacha, Kenneth Bindas of Kent State University, and Lawrence Richards of Miami University. Toni Vanden Bos of the Wright Brothers Collection at Wright State Unversity and a representative from the Ohio Public Records Advisory Board will talk about ways teachers can find and use their resources in the classroom.
